Safe Grocery Shopping

October 20, 2010 · by Linda

Ok so I know that post yesterday was long and it was harsh. But this is serious stuff we’re talking about here. Did you go watch the video linked at the bottom of the post?

So do I think we’re all going to die from shopping at the local grocery? No. Not right away anyhow.

So do I eat organic all the time? No, but I choose it whenever I can. And I definitely buy packages that say NON GMO on the label.

To make your shopping easier here is a short list of fruits and veggies that are ok to eat without buying organically grown. They mostly have few pests that attack them or thick skins to protect them so they don’t have a lot of pesticide residue:
•Asparagus
•Avocados
•Bananas
•Broccoli
•Cauliflower
•Kiwi
•Mangoes
•Onions
•Papaya
•Sweet Peas
Corn and Pineapples are also on this list as far as pesticide residue being acceptable but these two are mostly gmo crops unless grown organically

Now here are ones you should ALWAYS buy organically grown:

1.Nectarines – 97.3% of nectarines sampled were found to contain pesticides.
2.Celery – 94.5% sampled contained pesticides.
3.Pears – 94.4% sampled contain pesticides.
4.Peaches – 93.7% contain pesticides.
5.Apples – 91% sampled contain pesticides.
6.Cherries – 91% of cherries sampled were found to contain pesticides.
7.Strawberries – 90% of strawberries sampled contain pesticides.
8.Imported Grapes – 86% of imported grapes (i.e. Chile) sampled were found to contain pesticides.
9.Spinach – 83.4% sampled were found to contain pesticides.
10.Potatoes – 79.3% were found to contain pesticides.
11.Bell Peppers – 68% of bell peppers were found to contain pesticides.
12.Red Raspberries – 59% of red raspberries sampled were found to contain pesticides.

This list came from about.com but there are many websites that have this information available.

Now that I’ve scared you silly here’s something to soothe your nerves. Somewhere over the Rainbow sung by Eva Cassidy. Take a minute and give thanks for life.
